Experts studying possible travel ban on Indonesia - Duque

A group of government experts are currently studying the possibility of imposing a travel ban on Indonesia amid the threat of the more infectious Delta variant of coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

“This is being studied by our technical advisory group of experts,” Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said in an interview over ABS-CBN News Channel on Thursday, July 1.

“I understand that there are already many countries that the Delta variant has invaded,” he added.

Public health expert Dr. Tony Leachon earlier urged authorities to impose a travel ban on Indonesia over fears of the highly transmissible Delta variant, which was first detected in India and has already spread globally.

“PH should impose travel ban vs. Indonesia ASAP (as soon as possible) not only border control due to the alarming surge of COVID cases secondary to the highly transmissible Delta Variant,” Leachon wrote on Twitter.

“We don’t have high vaccination rate and definitely we can’t afford another surge. Sense of urgency is key,” he added.

The Philippines had extended its travel restrictions on inbound travelers from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman until July 15 due to the Delta variant.

“What is important is a very stringent border control,” Duque said.

“The quarantine protocol has to be strictly enforced,” he added.
