BACOLOD CITY – The city government here is mourning the death of incumbent Councilor Elmer Sy.

Sy, 65, passed away in a private hospital here Friday morning, June 25. However, his family has yet to issue a statement regarding the cause of his death.

Mayor Evelio Leonardia, in a statement, said that they were stunned by the news. “It is very hard to believe it happened. We lost a dedicated public servant,” he added.

Sy, known for his words “less talk, more action,” started his political career in 1990s during the term of Leonardia. He was an ally of Grupo Progreso led by Leonardia.

Leonardia said that Sy was a COVID-19 victim, but there’s no official statement yet on the primary cause of his death, though he was reported to be a dialysis patient survivor.

“May he serve as a medium for all of us to remember that we must always follow health protocols,” Leonardia said.

Leonardia said that Sy’s legacy of dedicated public service will always be remembered by this grateful city. “Indeed, he has gone a very long way since then,” he added.

Leonardia thanked the councilor for all the things he has done for the city and the people.
