BALANGA CITY, Bataan – This province was put back under a modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) status on Wednesday, June 16 after the national Inter-Agency Task Force (NIATF) found a surge in cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the province based on the day-to-day report of the provincial IATF and the Provincial Health Office (PHO).

PHO chief and provincial IATF vice chair Dr. Rosanna Buccahan said the rise in COVID-19 cases was due to increased mobility of people within the province and those who are coming from other areas.

Checkpoints were again established as the province started to implement stricter health protocols.

Traffic stalled at the boundary of Balanga City and Pilar town where two separate checkpoints at the Sta. Rosa bridge checked on motorists entering the two areas.

In Barangay Santa Lucia in Samal town, village councilman Norberto Buan informed residents of restrictions while the province is under MECQ from June 16-30.

Buan urged villagers to follow the guidelines set by the provincial government under Governor Albert Garcia and asked residents not to let children roam around.

“Hindi madali ang desisyong ito at naiintindihan ko ang epekto nito sa ating buhay at kabuhayan, ngunit kailangan nating sumunod upang hindi na dumami pa ang bilang ng nagkakasakit sa ating pamayanan (This decision is not easy and I understand the impact it has on our lives and livelihoods, but we need to comply so that the number of sick people in our community does not increase),” the governor said in an official social media post.

As of June 15, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the province is 9,756 with 1,277 active cases. The total number of recoveries is 8,163 while the total number of deaths is 316.
