Suspect in murder of former university president in Northern Samar nabbed

PLANDEZ
TACLOBAN CITY -- A 22-year-old construction worker believed to be the suspect in the killing of Rolando Delorino, former president of the University of Eastern Philippines in Catarman, Northern Samar, was arrested hours after the murder Sunday, June 13.

Police Col. Arnel Apud, Northern Samar police chief, identified the suspect as Alvin Plandez, from Barangay Cag Abaca, Catarman.

Apud said the suspect was identified through CCTV footage. He was also wearing the same clothes and had the murder weapon, a medium-length sharp-bladed knife, when he was arrested by the authorities.

Apud disclosed that the suspect went back to the crime scene to check on the status of the victim.

During his arrest, the suspect allegedly admitted to committing the crime.

Contrary to earlier reports of failed robbery, the suspect said he was allegedly ordered by members of the New People's Army (NPA) who threatened to kill his family.

On the other hand, Apud said they are still validating the information divulged by the suspect who is now under their custody.

The suspect had been a member of a robbery-extortion group and was arrested for attempted murder last February.

Delorino was found bathing in his own blood by his daughter at their residence in Barangay Dalakit, Catarman around 5:45 a.m.

He sustained several stab wounds which caused his instantaneous death.
