PH yoga enthusiasts lead online sessions on International Day of Yoga

Several yoga enthusiasts from the Philippines are set to lead free online sessions in celebration of the 7th anniversary of International Day of Yoga.

The Embassy of India in Manila organized a curated series of free online yoga sessions which will run from June 14-21 to mark International Day of Yoga this year.

"To mark the 7th International Yoga Day, a series of seven yoga sessions led by seven leading yoga teachers from the Philippines will provide participants a unique opportunity to discover various aspects of India’s age-old approach to well-being," the embassy said in a statement.

As the world continues to adapt to COVID-19 and several safety measures, the International Day of Yoga will be celebrated with the theme "Be With Yoga, Be At Home."

"This year, the International Day of Yoga comes at a crucial time," the embassy stated. "The challenges that the world has been experiencing for more than a year have brought about unprecedented changes and stress in our daily lives, making it even more important to work towards enhancing well-being, health, inner balance, and vitality."

The week-long celebration aims to make the holistic well-being practices of yoga asanas, pranayama, and meditation accessible to a large number of people in the Philippines.

Among the yoga professionals and practitioners who will lead the sessions are Maxene Magalona, Clara Day Herrera, Janis Cuevas, Chantal Umali, Sara Black, and Melissa Monasterio.

The series will end on June 21 with a session by teachers from the AV 108 yoga school that specializes in the Ashtanga Vinyasa style of Yoga.

Yoga continues to grow in popularity in the Philippines with an increasing number of yoga enthusiasts going beyond the physical aspects of yoga, and engaging with it as a potent tool of self-refinement.

On December 11, 2014, the United Nations proclaimed June 21 as the International Day of Yoga.

All sessions are free and open to all and streamed Live on the Embassy’s Facebook page @IndiainPhilippines.
