BTS’ ‘Butter’ generates 300 million Twitter posts in one month

K-pop superstars and Grammy nominees BTS’ new digital single “Butter” has generated over 300 million related tweets  for a month from April 24 to May 23, according to Twitter.

BTS released “Butter” on May 21 and according to Twitter’s official blog, 31 million tweets were generated in one day including five million tweets in just one hour from 12 a.m. to 1 a.m. EST (12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Philippine time) 

French President Emmanuel Macron retweeted a message sent to him, which read, “Mr. President, please stream ‘Butter’ by BTS!” 

As of May 21, according to Twitter, the most tweets related to “Butter” came from South Korea, US, Indonesia, Brazil, Japan, Philippines, Mexico, Thailand, India, and Peru. 

Hashtags including #BTS_Butter, #BTS, #방탄소년단, #BTSBackWithButter, #BTSArmy, and #SmoothLikeButter became the top trending topics around the world. 

“Twitter has also provided special emojis and congratulated BTS on the release of their new digital single. The special emojis have been available since April 28th. Using the hashtag #BTS_Butter generates a heart-shaped yellow butter logo to symbolize the group’s new song. The BTS and ARMY logos appear in yellow for the hashtags #BTS, #방탄소년단, and #BTSArmy,” according to the blog. 

When “Butter” was released, Twitter provided a new emoji in the shape of a melting butter for the hashtag #SmoothLikeButter for the song’s lyrics and #Got_ARMY_Behind_Us dedicated to BTS fans. 

The official Twitter Music account @TwitterMusic changed its name to “Twitter Music is listening to Butter.” 

When BTS won four awards at the Billboard Music Awards, held on May 23 (May 24 in the Philippines), 14.4 million tweets congratulating BTS were recorded in just three hours from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET (8 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Philippines) during the airing of the BBMAs.  

BTS’ tweet “Thank you very much to ARMYs for giving us the honor of winning all four nominations” generated 280,000 retweets and over 760,000 likes, the blog added.
