Brgy kagawad dies of heart attack while chasing protocol violators

Kagawad Jim Batislaon was known as one of the most dedicated barangay officials in Barangay Singao in Cotabato City and has gained much respect from his constituents.

Batislaon made sure he was always visible in all health protocol-related activities in their barangay, including the province’s “No Sunday Movement” policy, a typical family day, as his way of showing his devotion to his responsibility as a barangay kagawad.

Last weekend, Batislaon proved his commitment to his duty when he joined the Barangay Peace Action Team (BPAT) in chasing two motorcycle-riding men who sped off instead of stopping at the village checkpoint. Both men were initially flagged down for violating health protocols.

“The incident prompted a chase which ended at the boundary of an adjacent village,” said Kidapawan police director Lt. Col. Ramel Hojilla.

It turned out to be Batislaon’s final, heroic deed to his barangay after the hardworking village councillor collapsed moments after the chase ended.

“We managed to get the violators together with colleagues from BPAT but it cost Batislaon’s life,” chairman Eduardo Loma of Barangay Singao said.

Batislaon was declared dead on arrival after complaining of chest pains following the chase.

"We cannot file any charges against these violators in connection to Batislaon’s death because the village official died due to health concerns," said Hojilla.

Batislaon is survived by his wife Lourdes, 55; daughter Isoebelle, 24; and son Sam Joshua, 21.

North Cotabato started implementing a province-wide no movement Sunday on May 30 due to a spike in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in recent weeks.

Batislaon’s death is a huge loss to their barangay as well as to their neigboring villages as the well-loved village councilor’s sense of duty has been an inspiration to those who know him.

“What an amazing person and what a remarkable life. Sending our healing prayers and comfort to the bereaved family of Kgwd. Jim Batislaon. The students and faculty staff are very thankful for all the help you have extended in our school. We will miss you Sir Jim,” posted the Singao High School on their Facebook page.
