The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) said on Sunday (May 30) that it is investigating the death of one of their officers who sustained a gunshot wound in the chest while having a drinking binge with fellow policemen.
Brigadier General Antonio Yarra, QCPD director, identified the police officer who died as Corporal Higinio Calion Wayan, 31, assigned to the QCPD-Kamuning Police Station (PS-10).
Per a police report, Wayan and his three companions who were identified as PCpl. Harold Mendoza, PCpl. Sherwin Rebot and Lorenzo Lapay, were having a drinking binge at the rented apartment of Lapay in Bitoon Circle, Barangay Commonwealth, Quezon City around 3:50 a.m.
Mendoza reportedly took a rest while Rebot went to the comfort room, leaving Lapay alone with Wayan.
According to Lapay, he noticed that the victim took the service firearm of Rebot, a caliber .40 Glock pistol which was left on the top of the table.
He said Wayan then began to play with the said firearm and pointed it at his chest while saying, “Gusto mo iputok ko pa ito sa sarili ko (You want me to shoot my self) ?”
Wayan reportedly pulled the trigger hitting his chest that resulted in his instantaneous death.
The incident was reported by the other policemen to Batasan Police Station (PS-6).
Seized from the apartment were one caliber .40 Glock pistol with chamber load and inserted magazine containing 12 cartridges with one fired cartridge case;
one caliber .45 pistol with inserted magazine containing 10 cartridges inside a blue sling bag;
one 9mm Beretta pistol with an inserted magazine containing 14 cartridges that was tucked on the waist of the victim;
and one 9mm Beretta with one magazine containing 12 cartridges.
Yarra vowed that a “thorough investigation” is being conducted and the persons who were present during the incident will also be probed as a matter of procedure.
