The utilization rate of the intensive care unit (ICU) beds in six regions of the country are now at the “high-risk” level due to the rising number of coronavirus disease (COVID) cases, the Department of Health (DOH) said on Saturday, May 29.

These regions are Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, Zamboanga Peninsula, Caraga, Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) and Central Luzon, said DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire.

According to DOH, high-risk classification means that the utilization rate is at 70 percent to 85 percent.

“Katulad ng sinasabi po natin, bagama’t bumaba ang kaso dito sa NCR Plus bubble, makikita naman natin ang pagtaas ng mga kaso dito po sa ilang bahagi ng ating bansa pati na rin po ang paggamit ng kanilang mga ICU beds (Although the number of cases has dropped here in the NCR Plus bubble, we can see an increase in cases in some parts of our country as well as the use of their ICU beds),” said Vergeire.

Vergeire said that the ICU utilization rate in Zamboanga Peninsula is at 79 percent; while in Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, Caraga, Calabarzon, and Central Luzon is at 71 percent.

“So, kapag tiningnan po natin sila po lahat ay nasa high risk level po (So, when we look at them, they are all at a high risk level),” she said.

Vergeire said that the government is currently studying the appropriate community quarantine classification in areas with an increasing number of cases.

“Mayroon ho tayong ginagamit na mga pamantayan para masabi kung tayo ay mag-i-escalate or magdi- deescalate ng community quarantine classification. Ito po iyong numero ng mga kaso at saka iyong health care utilization (We have criteria that we use to determine if we will escalate or deescalate the community quarantine classification. This includes the number of cases and also the health care utilization),” said Vergeire.

“So, base po dito sa parameters na ginagamit natin dito po magiging basehan ng decision ng IATF officials at ito po ay ia-announce (So, based on the parameters we use here, it will be the basis for the decision of IATF officials and it will be announced) through an official statement coming from the Office of the President through our Spokesperson,” she added.
