New TV5 reality show to unleash ultimate Pinoy pop idols

TV5 has launched its newest reality show which will discover and mold the ultimate pop supergroup that will not only become global stage darlings, but good ambassadors of Filipino culture as well.

Called "PoPinoy," the new reality show will have its grand launch on Sunday, June 13. It will be hosted by Maine Mendoza and Paolo Ballesteros. Prior to the launch, catch the primer on Sunday, June 13.

Tasked with the all-important job of honing the aspirants into world-class performers is a rock-solid list of mentors and guest judges. The PoPinoy mentors, or headhunters, form a veritable who’s who in Pinoy showbiz: Maja Salvador, Jay R, DJ Loonyo, and Kayla Rivera.

The PoPinoy mentors shared what they are looking for in the next Pinoy supergroup.

DJ Loonyo: "Charisma. X-factor. Sabi ko nga, yung tipong kahit natutulog ka, mapapanaginipan mo. Sa dami ng magko-compete dapat may undeniable charisma ka. Yes! Presence mo dapat maramdaman ng mga judges, ng mga head hunters. Dapat tumatagos sa kamera." (I look for charisma, x-factor. It;s like you will dream about them. You need charisma to standout. The judges should feel your stage presence. The camera should love you).

Jay R: "Ma-technical naman ako. Matalas ang tenga ko sa mga nota. Ang mga hinahanap ko ay skills, creativity, and personality. Yun ang mga hinahanap ko." (I'm a technical person. My ears are sharp when it comes to musical notes. I go for skills, creativity and personality. That's what I'm looking for).

Maja Salvador: "Dapat gustong-gusto nila 'yung ginagawa nila. Based on experience, nag-umpisa ako na hindi naman marunong kunanta, hindi marunong sumayaw, at hindi marunong umarte. Maraming magaling, sumayaw kumanta pero hindi nangagaling sa puso. Dapat mahal nila yung ginagawa nila." (They should love what they do. Based on experience, I started out without any knowledge in dancing, singing, and acting. Now I can do all these things. Your performance should come from the heart).

Kyla Rivera: "Nagsimula rin ako sa singing contests, so I can relate rin sa mga contestant. And nag-crossover din ako sa theater. So dapat maging professional sila in taking their craft seriously. You need to be a great storyteller din when you perform for your fans." (I started out as a contestant in singing contests that's why I can also relate to the other contestants. I also do theater. The contestants should be professional in taking their craft seriously.)

To help mount PoPinoy, TV5 is teaming up with telco brand TNT, which has been known for championing local talent and Pinoy pride.

"Through our partnership with TV5, we aim to give our talented artists a platform to shine and fulfill their dreams while celebrating our original and rapidly-evolving Pinoy Pop music." said Jane J. Basas, SVP and Head of Consumer Wireless Business at Smart.

TNT will also launch its online show, TNT POP Show, hosted by Asia’s Pop Heartthrob, Darren Espanto, which will feature exclusive PoPinoy content such as behind-the-scenes, interesting stories by aspirants, and fun games, among others.

“We are very happy and proud to share PoPinoy with everyone.  It is the result of the collaboration of many brilliant and creative minds from TV5, Cignal, Archangel Media, and TNT. We are thrilled about this partnership as it will showcase world-class Filipino talent here and abroad,” said Cignal and TV5 President and CEO Robert P. Galang.
