Zamboanga City is establishing a pet cemetery for K9 dogs and other canine heroes who have served Zamboanga City.
The project was announced during a Zoom memorial for Kabang, Zamboanga’s hero dog, who died at the age of 13 last Monday.
Born in 2008, Kabang was among several dogs owned by Rudy Bunggal in Zamboanga City. Even then, she stood apart from the pack due to her sweet demeanor.
In 2010, Kabang lost part of her snout after leaping in front of a speeding motorcycle to save her master’s daughter and a cousin from certain death.
Unmindful of suggestions to let the dog be put to sleep, veterinarians led by Dr. Anton Lim and the University of California- Davis School of Veterinary Medicine treated his deformed profile.
Ironically, it was Kabang’s snout which endeared her even more to the public.
The local mayor declared her “Ambassador of Goodwill,” a title that elevated Kabang’s stature as a symbol of responsible pet ownership.
“Lots of Aspins were adopted after your story broke. By your bravery, you indirectly saved their lives too,” said Dr. LIm, who took over Kabang’s care.
Kabang died in her sleep last Monday, May 17, breaking the hearts of thousands of fans.
“She just wants to run free,” Dr. LIm said during the hero dog’s memorial.
