PNP ready to assist Maginhawa community pantry organizer amid death, rape threats

The Philippine National Police (PNP) urged on Wednesday, May 12, Ana Patricia Non, the organizer of the country's first community pantry in Maginhawa Street in Quezon City to file complaint against the senders of death and rape threats which she said she has been receiving in the past days.

PNP chief Gen. Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar said the complaint would serve as a go-signal for the police to conudct investigation to identify those responsible for threatening Non.

“Nakahanda po ang PNP na tulungan si Ms. Non lalo na kung may banta sa kanyang buhay. Maaari siyang dumulog sa pinakamalapit na police station para ireport itong mga threats na natatanggap niya at agad na maimbestigahan ng ating kapulisan kung sino ang gumagawa ng mga ito (The PNP is ready to help Ms Non if there are threats on her life. She can go to the nearest police station to report the threats and the police will look into this),” Eleazar said.

Non has been red-tagged by some government officers working for an anti-insurgency task force as they linked the community pantry to communist rebels. The redtagging forced Non to shut down the operation of the popular Maginhawa pantry for one day.

“Huwag po siyang magdalawang-isip na lumapit sa ating mga awtoridad dahil sinisiguro ko sa kanya na aaksyunan ng PNP ang kanyang mga hinaing o reklamo (She should not think twice in seeking assistance from the police beause I assure her that we will immediately act on it),” Eleazar said.

In cybercrime incidents such as bullying and threats sent via internet or telecom, the PNP needs the consent of the victim through filing of charges to conduct actions in identifying the sources of the threats. The Anti-Cybercrime Group, according to Eleazar, can also help in identifying and tracking down Non’s harassers.

Eleazar said that in the investigation of the threats, authorities will look into all angles including the previous alleged red-tagging of Non which she blames for the online harassment she has been receiving.

He urged Non to get in touch with the PNP so that she could avail of law enforcement services, including security detail, she requires.
