With the restrictions and limitations in mobility brought by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the Department of Education (DepEd) is set to hold a virtual National Science and Technology Fair (NSTF) for this school year.
DepEd, in a statement issued Tuesday, May 11, said that the NSTF for School Year (SY) 2020-2021 aims to highlight the role of science and research in addressing present global challenges and issues.
With the theme, “Agham, Pananaliksik, at Teknolohiya: Kabalikat sa Matatag at Maunlad na Pamayanan,” DepEd stressed that the NSTF 2021 will showcase learners’ resiliency, innovation, and creativity amidst global crisis through virtual Science fair and competitions.
“We cannot talk about quality education without also teaching or nurturing our learners in the intricacies of technology and communication, creativeness, and invention,” DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones explained – citing the importance of conducting NSTF this school year.
DepEd said that the 2021 NSTF also looks to showcase the competence and creativity of learners in providing solutions to attain sustainable development.
These competitions include the “Siyensikula” which is a production of original video competition focusing on a science concept and #SciTokperiments which is a Tiktok Science Experiment Competition.
The Bureau of Curriculum and Development-Curriculum Standards Development Division, in a separate statement, said that the entries and results of the competitions will give a “snapshot of what learners have been doing during this time and what they are actually learning.”
Aside from the various competitions, DepEd said the virtual NSTF will banner several activities such as virtual exhibits, virtual fora, workshops, career talks, technology and project launching, and film showing.
Related to this, DepEd enjoined each region to join the competition following its respective guidelines.
DepEd said that the school and division level screening will be on May 24 to June 11, 2021. The Regional Level Science and Technology Fair will start on June 21.
The submission of entries for the NSTF will be on July 9 and the culmination activity and awarding ceremony is scheduled on July 27 to 30.
