A quick guide to safe driving by recognizing standard road signs in the Philippines
The month of May is Land Transportation Safety Month, and according to Proclamation No. 115-A s. 1966, there is a constant need to propagate safety consciousness among those who operate motor vehicles.
Every month of May is to be devoted to promoting land transportation safety and accident prevention in the country.
With the Land Transportation Office implementing stricter requirements on student driver’s license applications by adding a Theoretical Driving Course (TDC) certificate as one of the prerequisites to securing one, applicants must first learn the basics of driving safely by following rules and regulations mandated by the LTO.
Here are some of the road traffic signs that must be followed as issued by the LTO and the Department of Public Works and Highways:
Regulatory signs are those that inform road users of traffic laws and regulations which, if disregarded, will constitute a violation. Under this category are priority signs, direction signs, prohibitive/restrictive signs, speed signs, parking and stopping signs, and miscellaneous signs.
Warning signs are used to warn motorists of potentially hazardous conditions on or adjacent to the road. They advise motorists of road conditions that require caution and may call for a reduction in speed in the interest of safety and that of other road users.
Under this category are horizontal signs, intersection signs, advance warning/traffic control device signs, road width signs, road obstacle signs, pedestrian signs, railway level crossing signs, supplementary signs, and other warning signs.
Guide or Informative signs inform and advise road users about the directions, distances, routes, location of services for road users, and point of interest.Under this category are advance direction signs, intersection direction signs, reassurance direction signs, finger board and direction signs, street name signs, town names and geographical feature signs, service signs, tourist information and tourist destination signs, route markers, and Asian highway route markers.
