Each year, May 3 is commemorated as World Press Freedom Day.

According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Education (UNESCO), World Press Freedom Day "acts as a reminder to governments of the need to respect their commitment to press freedom."
"World Press Freedom Day is a day of support for media which are targets for the restraint, or abolition, of press freedom," UNESCO said.
World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993.
It is also a day of remembrance of those journalists who lost their lives in the pursuit of a story.
This year's World Press Freedom Day theme is "Information as a Public Good."
