Antipolo pilgrimage season starts, but where is the crowd?

As the month of May enters, the pilgrimage season in Antipolo City begins.

But for the second time since the quarantine restrictions were imposed in 2020, the once lively Maytime Festival honoring the 17th century-old image of the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage housed in the Antipolo Cathedral will not be happening again.

There has been no mention on the social media sites of the Antipolo City government about activities pertaining to the Maytime Festival this year.

But the Antipolo Cathedral, through its official Facebook page, the Birhen ng Antipolo-Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, announced that the opening of the pilgrimage season will happen on May 4, 2021, with Holy Masses (live on Facebook) at 6 a.m., 8 a.m., 10 a.m., and 12 noon, 4 p.m., 6 p.m.

The procession, which will only be held inside the Antipolo Cathedral compound at 5 p.m. after the concelebrated Mass at 4 p.m., can also be witnessed virtually via Facebook Live.

The schedule of the succeeding processions will be on May 13, 22, 31, June 9, 18, 27, and July 6.

Novena Masses will be held every 3 p.m. starting May 5 until July 6, 2021.

Mass schedules for Saturdays are at 6 a.m., 8 a.m., 10 a.m., 12 noon. 4 p.m., and 6 p.m.. The same schedule goes for Sundays with the addition of the 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Masses.

The Antipolo Cathedral’s celebration of the Jubilee Pilgrimage Season 2021 also coincides with commemoration of the 395th anniversary of the arrival in Manila of the brown-colored Marian image via the Galleon El Almirante in 1626.

The cathedral, also known as the National Shrine of the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, the first national Marian shrine to be declared in the country and South East Asia, will also be hosting a series of marathon prayers to end the pandemic, including the praying of the Holy Rosary, in the whole month of May.

The shrine was chosen by the Vatican to lead in the reciting of the Holy Rosary prayer for the intention of families on May 7. Thirty other Marian sites are joining the Vatican-initiated global prayer marathon for the end of COVID-19 pandemic.

The historic event is scheduled to be broadcast live by the Vatican Media at 6 p.m. (Rome time), or 12 midnight (Philippine time).

Shrine rector, Fr. Reynante Tolentino, in the message aired on the cathedral’s Facebook page, enjoined the devotees to participate in the cathedral’s activities for the pilgrimage season.

Only Authorized Persons Outside of Residence (APOR) are allowed entry in the cathedral in line with the maximum health protocols imposed by the government.
