Officials and employes of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) were caught by surprise over the sudden resignation of one of its top tax collectors.

The BIR management was silent over the decision of lawyer Romulo Aguila Jr. to give up his position as director of Revenue Region (RR) No.7B based in Pasig City.
Aguila did not answer repeated calls, but later texted this reporter that "it was an optional retirement."
The 59-year-old taxman who is also a certified public accountant (CPA) rose from the ranks starting as an examiner. He was later promoted as a revenue district officer, regional director, and head of the Large Taxpayers Service.
Prior to his last post, Aguila headed the Quezon City RR before it was split last year into RR Nos. 7A and 7B.
The RR 7B covers the cities and towns just outside Quezon City including San Juan, Pasig, Mandaluyong, Marikina and, the whole province of Rizal.
It is tasked to collect some P80 billion this year.
