Donations pour in for Hospicio de San Jose after appeal for help

Donations poured in for Hospicio de San Jose, a shelter in Manila for homeless children and senior citizens, after they released an appeal on social media.

In a Facebook post by the Archdiocesan Shrine of Santo Niño de Tondo on Thursday noon (April 28), the Sisters and Daughters of Charity appealed for donations as they were running out of food and other necessities.

This as 23 of its staff and clients tested positive for COVID-19. At least one elderly client has died of the disease. 

"They are running out of food because nobody is donating to them and the sisters are worried about the children and elders. They are appealing to your kind generosity," the post read.

Within hours, the shelter has received donations of rice, milk, diapers, and other toiletries good for two weeks, a representative from the facility said.

The representative from Hospicio de San Jose, who requested anonymity, said the COVID-19 cases in the facility are symptomatic. They are receiving medical assistance from San Juan De Dios Hospital. 

The representative also said that they will continue to receive donations but prefer monetary assistance as they already have enough food.

Those who donated should send a copy of their deposit slip to [email protected]. The shelter's management can send an official receipt of what was bought with the donations.

Hospicio de San Jose serves a total of 262 clients. Of this figure, 214 are children while 48 are elders.
