To give parents and guardians more time to register, the Department of Education (DepEd) will be accepting learners who would want to participate in the Early Registration for the upcoming school year until the end of May 2021.
“We understand the situation right now,” DepEd Undersecretary for Human Resource and Organizational Development Jesus Mateo told the Manila Bulletin on Wednesday, April 28.
Recognizing the difficulty that learners and parents or guardians might be facing due to quarantine restrictions imposed in their respective areas and other related concerns, DepEd said that certain adjustments will be made to accommodate those who still wish to register early.
“We are aware of the difficulty of registering your child or children within the time frame of early registration,” Mateo told the parents and guardians.
The early registration for School Year (SY) 2021-2022 started on March 26 and will be open until Friday, April 30, 2021.
Due to the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) situation in the country, DepEd directed schools to conduct remote early registration.
DepEd said that remote applications may be done online or through text. In low risk areas, physical registration in schools and barangays might be allowed given that public health and safety protocols will be strictly followed.
“While the period of early registration will end on Friday, we will continue to accept early registrants until end of May to give you more time to register,” Mateo said.
Initial assessment
Asked to assess the conduct of early registration this year, Mateo said that DepEd considers the initial results a “great achievement.”

“Achieving close to 70 percent within the time period compared to last year is for us is already a great achievement,” Mateo said. “This, in spite of the challenges like restrictions and internet connection issues of parents,” he added.
The early registration is an annual activity led by DepEd. It aims to ensure that learners Kindergarten, Grades 1, 7 and 11 - both for public elementary and secondary schools - are already registered before the new school year opens.
DepEd already announced the tentative date for the opening of SY 2021-2022 on Aug. 23.

However, this plan continues to draw mixed reactions coming from various quarters especially as the challenges under the current distance learning set-up remain unresolved.
