BACOLOD CITY - A total of 55 houses were razed by fire at Barangay Singcang-Airport here on Monday, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).

Chief Insp. Rodel Legaspi, city fire marshal, said that of the total number, 47 houses were totally destroyed while eight others were damaged.
Legaspi said they immediately responded to the fire scene after they sighted a thick black smoke from a far at the fire station.Â
Legaspi said the fire broke out around 4:18 p.m. from the two-storey house of a certain Teresa Pestaño, 65, which started from the second floor of the house made of mixed concrete and light materials.
Legaspi said firefighters had difficulty penetrating the area at first because there was no proper way for the fire truck to park near the fire scene, adding that they need to pull the water hose to reach the affected area.
Legaspi said the fire gobbled several houses because most structures were built of light materials and strong winds also caused the immediate spread of the fire to other houses, even those make-shift structures across the creek.
No casualties were reported, although there were some residents, who got minor injuries when they tried to help each other put out the fire. The BFP declared fire out around 5:21 p.m.
Legaspi said they are eyeing an overheated electrical installation as the initial possible cause of the blaze.
Meanwhile, barangay captain Rosinie Distrito, in a media interview, said the fire affected about more than 40 households.
Distrito said the fire victims were temporarily sheltered in a school and modular tents. The city government had already extended assistance to the affected families.
