DOH sees slight decline in average daily reported COVID-19 cases

The Department of Health (DOH) on Saturday, April 24, said that it has observed a slight decline in the average daily reported cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the country.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said that the transmission rate or the R-naught of the virus has been decreasing in the recent week.

This means that the two-week enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in areas under National Capital Region-plus (NCR-plus) bubble and the imposition of localized lockdowns have started to have an effect, she explained.

“So ngayon nakakakita po tayo ng kaunting pagbaba sa average daily reported cases natin (So now we are seeing a slight decrease in our average daily reported cases),” Vergeire said in a televised press briefing.

“Last week po ang ating average was 10,858, seven-day moving average iyan. Ngayong linggo po ang ating daily weekly average is 9,556. So it’s much lower now by 1,300 (Last week our average was 10,858, that's a seven day moving average. This week our daily weekly average is 9,556. So it’s much lower now by 1,300),” she added.

Despite this small improvement, the health official has urged the public not to let their guard down and continue strictly observing the minimum public health standards.

“Gusto natin bantayan pa rin po itong nakikita natin at ayaw pa rin po nating maging complacent tayong lahat para magtuloy-tuloy na po ito sa pagbaba. (But we still want to monitor what we are seeing, and we still don’t want everyone to be complacent so that it will continue to go down),” she said.

In a virtual press forum on April 23, Vergeire said that the positivity rate in Metro Manila has gone down to 18.3 percent compared to the previous 20.4 percent.

She explained that several factors have contributed to the small drop in the average daily new cases, including the implementation of the two-week ECQ in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

“So nakikita natin may kunting pagbaba (So we can see a slight decrease),” Vergeire said.

“Sana magtuloy-tuloy na hanggang sa mga susunod na linggo itong pagbaba ng mga kaso (Hopefully this drop in cases will continue in the coming weeks),” she added.
