Maginhawa Community Pantry temporarily closes due to red tagging concerns

The community pantry on Maginhawa Street in Quezon City temporarily halted its operations due to red-tagging issues.

Ana Patricia Non, the proponent of the community pantry, on Tuesday sought the help of Mayor Joy Belmonte after three supposed police officers asked for her cellphone number and to which organization she belonged.

"Natatakot po ako maglakad mag-isa papunta sa Community Pantry ng alas singko ng umaga dahil po sa walang basehang paratang sa amin. Gusto ko lang po talaga makatulong at sana po ay huwag nyo masamain (I'm afraid of going to our Community Pantry alone at 5 a.m. because of baseless accusations against us. I really just want to help people, please don't take it the wrong way.)," Non said in her Facebook post.

Non also cited that another reason for the temporary closure of the community panty was after the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) and the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) shared on their respective Facebook pages a post apparently accusing community pantries as a project of the Communist Party.

"Maraming salamat sa pagtulong ngunit huwag natin gamitin ang community pantry para makapangloko ng tao (Thanks for the help but let's not use community pantries to fool people)," the post shared by both QCPD and NTF-ELCAC Facebook pages read.

"Ang Community Pantry ay para sa bayan, huwag gamitin para sa sariling kapakanan. Ang Tulong Kabataan ay isang organisasyon na ginawa ng CPP-NPA-NDF para makakuha ng pondo at makapagrecruit ng mga kabataan at mamamayan (Community Pantries are for the people. Let's not use it on our own advantage. Tulong Kabataan is an organization built by the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army-National Democratic Front to gather funds and recruit the youth)," it added.

The NTF-ELCAC also shared another post which alleged that "community pantries were being used as propaganda" machines of the Communist Party.

"Ito ba ang taos-pusong tulong (Is this really a whole-hearted way of helping?)," NTF-ELCAC said.

Other individuals also red-tagged the project.

Non said she would temporarily close the community pantry "with a heavy heart" because her intentions in initiating it were "good."

"Ilang araw na din po na napakaraming pinagsisilbihan nito at ganoon din po ang tulong na dumadating (It's been several days since our community pantry started to serve the public and receive a lot of help)," she said.

"Sigurado po maraming tao po ang pipila sa amin bukas pero kailangan po muna nila maghintay sa susunod na araw bago po ito maipamahagi. Lalo na po at nagkaproblema kanina ang ibang Community Pantry sa mga kapulisan (I'm sure na many people would line up tomorrow but they would have to wait for several days, especially that our community pantry encountered problem with the police)," she added.
