Comelec willing to work with DepEd to increase pay for teachers serving in May 2022 polls

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said it is willing to work with the Department of Education in order to find ways to accommodate their request for additional pay for those who would serve in the May 2022 polls.

"The Comelec is willing to work with the DepEd in order to find ways to either accommodate their requests or, in the appropriate instances, to help them achieve the results they seek," Comelec Spokesman James Jimenez said said in a statement on Thursday, April 15.

He said the poll body recognizes the invaluable role they play in the electoral process.

"The Comelec recognizes the invaluable role played by teachers in ensuring the success of elections," said Jimenez.

Education Secretary Leonor Briones on Thursday, April 15,  said they have sought additional pay for teachers set to serve come the May 2022 elections.

She said they have asked the Commission for a P3,000-increase for pay of teachers for their poll duties.

Under the Election Service Reform Act of 2016, persons rendering election service shall be entitled to honoraria, with Board of Election Inspectors chairmen getting P6,000 while BEI members will get P5,000; as well as an additional travel allowance of P1,000 each.

The law provides that the amounts indicated shall be subject to review by the Comelec, in consultation with the DepEd, every three years.
