Student wows netizens with 'malunggay' ice cream

Staying cool while staying healthy.

To beat the summer heat, a student from the University of Santo Tomas (UST) created ice cream from moringa (malunggay).

Luis Azcona said her sister Christina was the one who made the ice cream from the malunggay tree in their own backyard in Misamis Occidental.

"The powder is supposed to go to our lactating sister in Cebu, but it doesn't hurt to ice-cream-ize some of it. Tastes surprisingly good," Azcona wrote in a Facebook post.

Azcona shared that the ice cream tasted like matcha (green tea).

"Nung una worried ako na baka maglasang tinola. Pero gulat ako kasi hindi. Actually, naalala ko talaga ang matcha sa lasa nya. Pati sa kulay. Matcha talaga ang comparison ko - pati ng pinsan at friend. May friend pa nga ako na minsan daw gumagamit ng malunggay as replacement for matcha (At first I was worried it would taste like tinola. But I was surprised because it did not. Actually, I remember the taste of matcha. From its color. Matcha was my comparison - my cousin too and a Facebook friend. My cousin sometimes even uses malunggay as a replacement for matcha)," he told the Manila Bulletin.

"Baka dahil ice cream form, may something siguro sa condensed milk o cream na nagpapa-match sa kanya (Maybe because of its ice cream form, there's something in the condensed milk or in the cream that made it taste like matcha)," he added.

Azcona said a lot of people were asking him for the recipe, so he decided to post it on Facebook. He added that they will also post a separate cooking video late this week.
