Experts suggest upgrading RT-PCR machines to detect new COVID-19 variant

Laboratories may need to upgrade their RT-PCR or reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction machines to be able to detect a new variant of concern of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The suggestion was made by OCTA Research Team in a press briefing Thursday following reports that a new COVID-19 variant, which was supposedly found in France, cannot be easily detected.

"It’s been identified as a variant of concern. We’re still learning more about it," Dr. Guido David said, "But the RT-PCR, it depends on the RT-PCR because there are several types...depending on which chain they're testing... not detectable, meaning it will register a false negative."

"We can always possibly upgrade our RT-PCR if we want to be able to detect this new variant," he said, "That's one strategy."

David also said they are recommending a "strict quarantine" for those entering the country, including foreigners and returning Filipinos.

" a strict 14-day quarantine that could be mandatory regardless of RT-PCR test result," he said.
