Duterte asks: Can Ivermectin really cure COVID-19 patients?
President Duterte wants to know if the controversial anti-parasitic drug Ivermectin can really cure coronavirus infections as the country grapples with surging COVID-19 cases for the past weeks.
In his Monday’s televised meeting with Cabinet members, the President clarified with Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Director General Eric Domingo about the drug’s use in animals.
“May nalaman ka ba na may sakit na COVID na gumaling sa Ivermectin? (Do you know anyone with COVID who got cured with Ivermectin?),” Duterte asked.
Domingo explained that some people who were COVID-19 positive claimed to be treated with the anti-parasite drug, but there was no definitive proof yet that Ivermectin is to be responsible for that.
“Tama (Right), because I think that --- that’s not what --- that medicine is for animal use?” the President said.
At present, Ivermectin is registered only for animal use by veterinarians, as well as for some skin infestation in humans, Domingo said.
He also explained that the Philippines is currently waiting for the results of the clinical trials being done abroad and that the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said the country does not need to hold its own trials.
Because Ivermectin is not originally designed as an anti-viral drug that can treat infections like COVID-19, the Philippines currently only allows remdesivir, favipiravir, and tocilisumab for the treatment of COVID-19.
Last week, however, the FDA approved the “compassionate use” of the drug against COVID-19 despite warnings from international health experts.
Experts said taking large doses of the drug is dangerous and can cause harm. They also warned against taking Ivermectin preparations for animals, which have different compositions from those approved for human use.
Domingo said the Philippines have licensed compounding pharmacies that can mix the drug and turn it into a capsule. But he warned that this is only done when there is a proper prescription from doctors.
“But this is of course per prescription. Kailangan po may reseta 'yong pasyente at saka individually po prine-prepare ito. Hindi po ito puwedeng for mass distribution kasi kung ganoon po for commercial, kailangan po i-register na Certificate of Product Registration (The patient needs to have a prescription and this is individually prepared. This is not for mass distribution because if it’s for commercial use, it needs to be registered as Certificate of Product Registration),” Domingo explained.
