Pageant fans missed Shamcey Supsup-Lee, the charismatic national director of Miss Universe Philippines, during the departure of Rabiya Mateo for the 69th Miss Universe pageant recently.
Fans said they were expecting the former Binibini-turned-businesswoman to join Rabiya at the airport, but she wasn’t around.
So where’s Shamcey?
According to Jonas Gaffud, creative director for Miss Universe Philippines, Shamcey did not join them at the airport.
“Aside from Miss Universe Philippines, Shamcey has kids and family business to attend to. Madalas nasa Zoom lang kami these days because of the pandemic,” said Gaffud, who is now in Los Angeles, during an interview on Monday, April 12.
But Gaffud said that Shamcey is always in constant communication with the Board.
The pageant expert also said that Shamcey was in Bohol where she and other pageant officials accompanied Rabiya for the video and photo shoot.
This is the first time that the Philippines sent an official delegate to the Miss Universe pageant under a different organization. Shamcey, who won third runner-up at the 2012 Miss Universe pageant in Brazil, was appointed national director of the Miss Universe Philippines Organization in 2020.
Asked what’s keeping Rabiya busy these days following her arrival in the US, Gaffud said: “May jet lag siya so now rest muna.”
Rabiya and the Philippine team are expected to fly to Florida for the pre-pageant activities of Miss Universe beauty pageant on May 6. This is Rabiya’s first trip outside the Philippines.
More than 70 candidates will compete at the 69th Miss Universe beauty pageant on May 16 (May 17 in Manila).
