Antique village chief in hot water for placing barricade tape in health worker's house

ILOILO CITY – A village official could be facing trouble for placing a barricade tape in front of the house of a hospital worker which recently underwent COVID-19 swab test and supposed quarantine protocol.

Barangay Captain Silvestre Tolentino of Calala village in Hamtic town in Antique ordered Tuesday night to put that tape typically used to warn people of possible hazard.

In a radio interview, Tolentino justified his move by stating that they were not informed that the female staff, who works at the Angel Salazar Memorial General Hospital, underwent quarantine procedures.

“We were not informed. That's the problem. The person was quarantined in the barrio but we were not informed,” said Tolentino in an interview with Bombo Radyo.

“As the barangay captain, I will defend my people. My people just wanted to inform there's someone under quarantine,” added Tolentino.

But Governor Rhodora Cadiao slammed the barangay captain for discriminating against a hospital staff.

“It is not only discrimination, but harassment,” Cadiao told Manila Bulletin in a phone interview Wednesday, April 7.

“This needs to be addressed. Otherwise, the harassment and discrimination against our frontline workers will happen again and again,” emphasized Cadiao, who herself is a nurse by profession.

The lady governor said there were also previous cases of discrimination and harassment against returning locally stranded individuals (LSIs) and Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).

Cadiao has urged the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to investigate the incident and take necessary actions against Tolentino.
