Bring love to others, Cebu prelate urges faithful

CEBU CITY – Bring comfort, forgiveness, and love to others, Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma said in a message to the faithful in a Mass that he celebrated on Easter Sunday marking the official start of the year-long celebration of the 500 Years of Christianity (YOC) in the Philippines.

“There are many who are hungry, homeless, lonely, and afraid. Many who long for companions. Yes, we are gifted so that we can bring comfort, forgiveness, and love to others,” said Palma.

“So that the hungry may have some food and the lonely may have some friends. So that those who hunger for God and for His mercy may know that through us, indeed, Jesus has risen and is present in our midst,” the prelate added in his Homily which was in line with the Archdiocese of Cebu’s theme for the 500 YOC celebrations titled “Gifted to Give.”

Palma added that the current health crisis should strengthen one’s faith in God.

"COVID brings fear but also deep in our hearts, our love for Christ strengthens our faith.
COVID may bring death but the risen Lord brings us life. We profess that our faith is stronger than our fear. Our light in the midst of darkness, our light even in the midst of fear," Palma said.

Attended by dozens of devotees at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral, the kickoff ceremony started with the opening of the Cathedral's Jubilee Door to mark the declaration of the start of the Jubilee Year.

The 13 centuries-old churches which have Holy Doors around the Archdiocese of Cebu include the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral (1598) and San Nicolas Parish (1584) in Cebu City, the National Shrine of St. Joseph (1638) in Mandaue City, the National Shrine of Our Lady of Rule in Lapu-Lapu City (1745), San Vicente Ferrer church in Bogo City (1850), Sto. Tomas de Villanueva Church in Danao City (1745), St. Michael the Archangel Church in Argao (1733), San Fransisco de Asis church in Balamban (1857), Patrocinio de Maria Parish in Boljoon (1606), St. Catherine of Alexandria Church in Carcar City (1599), St. Peter and Paul Church in Bantayan Island (1580), St. Anne Church in Barili (1614), and San Guillermo de Aquitana Church in Dalaguete (1711).

The Archdiocese of Cebu explained that anyone who passes through the Holy Doors and who recently went to confession receives Holy Communion and prays for the intercession of the Holy Father and the Church will receive plenary indulgence or complete remission of all temporal punishments due to sins.

Palma led the procession into the Jubilee Door and then presided over the Mass in which church priests and workers also conducted the renewal of baptism.

The event concluded with the unveiling of the Cathedral's Jubilee Cross another highlight in line with the 500 YOC.

In an interview with reporters after the Mass, Palma said he was elated with the success of the opening ceremony.

"What we have done is being done all over the country. That coordinated celebration is a sign of unity but at the same time, we are aware of the significance of our whole country, the Philippines," said Palma.

As part of the 500 YOC celebrations, the Archdiocese will lead the reenactment of the First Baptism in Plaza Sugbo on April 14 as well as the blessing of the third Cebu-Mactan Bridge.

Activities will also include a motorcade around Metro Cebu for the image of the Sto. Nino and the Jubilee Cross from April 11 to 13.
