It seems we have still a long way to go in hitting the safety line of this pandemic. Well then, why not see things in a new and more promising perspective — via the new OPPO Reno5 5G.

OPPO puffed up its chest in announcing “all the high-end features that the Reno series is known for – camera system innovation, smooth performance, vibrant display, future-ready connectivity options, and a powerful operating system.” On in shorter version, “a smartphone designed in a way that lets you #PictureLifeTogether.”

A Galactic Silver is the unit we got to review, in aqua blue-ish box that has a bold and big “5” on top of the Reno5 and 5G tags.

From there, unboxed and taken for a spin, we found more numbers and factors to delight us through the extended ECQ.

The OPPO Reno5 5G is proving to be a good buy with its 6.43-inch AMOLED Full HD+ display blazing to a fast 90Hz refresh rate.

Colors onscreen, vibrant and detailed, or you may opt to a Light or Dark mode in the menus. We found the animations and scrolling pleasantly smooth and games not quite taxing to the eyes.

This Galactic Silver has a rear quad camera array — a large primary 64MP F/1.7 camera with PDAF and autofocus, an 8MP F/2.2 ultra wide angle camera and two 2MP cameras, one for macro and another as depth sensor. We tried them all, inluding taking videos of up to [email protected]

The main cam can take images at up to 64MP resolution in 4:3 aspect ratio, up 20x digital zoom and preset 1x, 2x and 5x zoom increments. The front selfie camera has a 32MP fixed focus sensor and can shoot up to [email protected] video.

A fun fact: OPPO boosted the Reno5 5G AI and other new features like a Dual View video mode that combines the feed from both the front and rear camera into a single video. The AI Highlight Video mode applies HDR effects for enhanced dynamic range and brightens up videos for both the front and rear camera when you leave AI mode on.

We made great shots in daylight with good color accuracy and consistency between the ultra wide angle camera and the main camera. We also found the primary and ultra wide angle camera offer good details and quite dynamic, and relatively steady even at 20x digital zoom under daylight.

By the way, in facing the new demands brought by the 5G era, and in keeping with the Reno series’ long-standing pursuit of providing a superior video and photo experience, OPPO has developed a more advanced and more comprehensive imaging system on the new Reno5 5G – the OPPO Full Dimension Fusion (FDF) Portrait Video System.

Based on top-end imaging hardware, innovative image processing algorithms, and user-centric software, the OPPO Full Dimension Fusion Portrait Video System caters to the diverse video creation needs of users in almost any situation, empowering them to capture the joy of life in every moment with easy-to-create professional-quality video content.

The all-new OPPO Full Dimension Fusion Portrait Video System works on the basis of top-end imaging hardware in tandem with flexible, intelligent software, together with OPPO’s extensive expertise in portrait scene detection and portrait feature design.

A bummer: the limited mobility in search of 5G areas with highest outdoor coverage as a result of the pandemic.

The OPPO Reno5 5G is packed with features to excite mobile gamers: The Bullet Screen Message, a feature that provides in-game notification messaging that will be displayed as a burst on the screen letting you receive messages without leaving the game; the Gamer Mode, a feature where it lets you temporarily tune out interruptions so you can focus on winning your game; while Gaming Shortcut Mode, is a feature where you can go straight to the gaming page in just one tap; and the Adjustable Gaming Touch lets you set your preferred fluidity and touch responsiveness levels for each of your games independently.

Battery life on the Reno5 5G Snapdragon 765G with screen brightness set to auto is very satisfactory, reaching 12 hours and 5 minutes of active screen time. We also tried the 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 charger, and we’re able to top it up to full in under an hour.

Please note that the OPPO Reno series has focused on adding pleasing attributes like a feature-rich camera setup and premium build quality on its smartphones. And it showed with the Reno5 5G design — thin and lightweight and a sparkly finish overall.

That the OPPO Reno5 5G is integrated with a big screen of 6.43 inches OLED capacitive touchscreen a screen density of 409 PPI, supporting Dual SIM (Nano-SIM, dual stand-by) and running on the Android 11 + ColorOS 11.1 operating system, make the smartphone a very serious contender for the best products of 2021.
