LOOK: Cartoonist creates 'lugaw'-themed Last Supper art

A cartoonist created a "lugaw"-themed Last Supper days after the famed Filipino rice porridge or "lugaw" went viral on social media.

Believing that lugaw is "essential, political, and sacred," artist Deng Coy Miel created a timely art that would resonate with a lot of Filipinos during the Lenten season.

"There was a lot of talk about it lately. As a visual commentator, I on its potential to comment on the current dismal state of things," Miel told the Manila Bulletin.

"In this instance, I have conflated lugaw with an event that happened in the gospel accounts that resonates with the Filipinos' observance of Lent, the Last Supper," he added.

It is on Maundy Thursday that the Last Supper, or the final meal that Jesus shared with his apostles in Jerusalem before his crucifixion, is remembered.

Lugaw became a trending topic in the Philippines after a barangay official was caught on video preventing a rider from delivering food to a customer in a barangay in Bulacan, saying that lugaw was “not essential.”

Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque on Wednesday, March 31, has already clarified that lugaw or any food products are considered essential goods, and that their delivery should not be hampered.
