Duterte recommends raising MAV for pork imports to 350,000 metric tons

President Duterte has endorsed an expansion in the import volume of pork to boost the country's supply and stabilize rising cost.

"The Palace confirms that President Rodrigo Roa Duterte recommended the increase in the Minimum Access Volume (MAV) for pork by 350,000 MT, in addition to the current MAV of 54,210 MT for the year 2021," Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said in a statement Friday, March 26.

"This is to immediately augment the supply of pork, stabilize increasing prices, and address the pressing issues on food security," he added.

Roque said the President’s letter to Congress recommended the increase in MAV for pork imports.  

The Department of Agriculture earlier proposed a higher import volume of pork imports to 404,000 metric tons to curb the soaring local prices of the meat product. The country's present MAV for pork imports is around 54,000 metric tons.

Pork imports within MAV are charged 30 percent tariff while products beyond the quota are slapped with 40 percent.

The government recently has taken steps to boost the country's pork supply to bring down prices following the adverse impact of the African Swine Fever on local hog production.
