Dar nominated as convenor for UN Summit in September

The United Nations (UN) in the Philippines has conveyed its support to Agriculture Secretary William Dar for his nomination as the Philippines’ National Dialogues Convenor for the UN Summit to be held in September 2021.

Organized by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the Summit is part of the Decade of Action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 and aims to deliver its progress through a food systems approach, leveraging the interconnectedness of food systems to global challenges such as hunger, climate change, poverty, and inequality. 

UN Philippines Resident Coordinator Gustavo Gonzalez met Tuesday with Dar along with officials from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Food Programme (WFP), and the International Food and Agricultural Development (IFAD). 

In their meeting, Dar expressed his appreciation for the support being given by the UN Philippines in the organization of national consultations for a successful global Food Systems Summit.

Consistent with the UN initiative, Dar said the Philippines has adopted a strategic development framework anchored on modernization, industrialization, value chain-based consolidation and professionalization that continues to be guided by a whole-of-society consultation process.

The agriculture chief emphasized that the Summit is happening at a time when “the disruption caused by COVID-19 requires game-changing initiatives towards more responsive policies that will ensure more inclusive development outcomes.”

Gonzalez, for his part, said preparations for the Summit will offer the Philippines a “great opportunity to mobilize the private sector, farmers, academia, civil society and communities to rethink the way we produce and consume food. Inclusive and sustainable food systems must become a priority in the current circumstances.”

The Summit will bring together key players from the worlds of science, business, policy, healthcare, and academia, as well as farmers, indigenous people, youth organizations, consumer groups, environmental activists, and other key stakeholders.

Dialogues among member states, including the Philippines, will be conducted in the lead-up to the Summit.

It was in October 2019 when UN Secretary-General Guterres announced the Food Systems Summit on the occasion of World Food Day. 

Meanwhile, FAO Representative in the Philippines Kati Tanninen expressed her agency’s commitment to supporting the Philippine government in achieving great results in the areas of food security, agriculture production, and building resilience. 

Tanninen made this assurance during a virtual meeting with Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. on Tuesday, March 23, 2021.

The two officials also discussed collaboration in the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) response and the support to the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
