Businessman killed, woman hurt in Davao City shooting

DAVAO CITY – Authorities are investigating the shooting incident that left a 40-year-old businessman dead and his female companion in critical condition on J.P. Laurel Avenue in Davao City at 3:40 p.m. Monday.

Davao City Police Office (DCPO) spokesperson Capt. Rose Aguilar said Tuesday that police have no suspects yet in the shooting of the victims Wilhelm P. Cubelo, a resident of Barangay Tipas, Magugpo East in Tagum City, and Lynrose T. Sarahino, 33, of Puan, this city.

According to Aguilar, Cubelo was driving his black Ford Raptor along J.P. Laurel Avenue when tailed by the suspects onboard a white Toyota Innova without a plate number. Upon reaching the Travelers’ Inn, the Toyota Innova drove next to the black vehicle and fired at the victims.

She said that Cubelo drove from the inn to evade the assailants but was pursued by the gunmen until Cybergate Delta along J.P. Laurel Avenue.

She added that the suspects immediately left the scene after the incident.

Aguilar added that police authorities immediately responded to the scene and brought the victims to the nearby Southern Philippines Medical Philippines (SPMC).

Cubelo succumbed to gunshot wounds in the left side of the body while his female companion was seriously wounded, Aguilar said.

Police investors recovered four fired cartridge cases believed to be from a .45-caliber gun near the victim’s vehicle and another fired cartridge case in a nearby Caltex Gasoline Station. The glass door of the Traveler’s Inn was also damaged.

She said police are trying to identify the suspects and their motives for shooting the victims.
