Mayor Teodoro urges gov't to 'further increase' capacity of nat'l healthcare system

Marikina Mayor Marcy Teodoro has urged the national government to “further increase” the capacity of the national healthcare system amid the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the country.

Teodoro made the call in an interview with CNN Philippines as he reported that Marikina is “experiencing the problem of referring patients within the city.”

“Now, we need to find hospitals outside the city,” he said.

Teodoro said hospitals in Marikina are already at full capacity in terms of utilization of COVID beds.

“This is now the challenge really for the national government or for the Department of Health to make One Hospital Command more functional at this point in time,” Teodoro said.

“There’s a need to further increase the capacity of the national healthcare system, meaning, we also need to increase the manpower, the equipment, as well as the bed capacity to deal primarily with the current outbreaks that we are experiencing,” he added.

Teodoro also said there’s a need for “complementation of resources” from the national government and the enforcement of more measures such as contact tracing and testing from the local government to improve the country's ability to do epidemic surveillance.
