K-pop superstars BTS said they felt disappointed when they failed to win at the 63rd Grammy Awards but assured fans that they were okay and that they were very proud that they were nominated and performed at the ceremony.
BTS were nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their hit song “Dynamite,” making history as the first K-pop act to receive a Grammy nomination. “Rain On Me” by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande won the award.
Angry BTS ARMYs took to Twitter to express their anger and disappointment, saying that “Dynamite” should have won as it broke records and topped charts, and accused the Recording Academy of racism because BTS are Koreans.
Despite not winning their first Grammy award, BTS impressed with their performance of “Dynamite,” which was filmed on a rooftop helipad of a hotel in Seoul.
BTS held a V Live broadcast on March 15 after the Grammy Awards to explain to fans how they felt and to thank them for their support.
For the Grammy Awards pre-show, BTS said they were up at 2:30 a.m. to get their makeup done.
“Thank you for waiting until the end of the show,” they told fans with RM saying, “We didn’t know that we would take this long.”
For their “Dynamite” performance, Suga said, “We prepared the stage very fast.” Jin said they wanted to film the performance with just one take “so we filmed it so many times.”
“We put a lot of efforts to make the best performance,” said J-Hope.
“But if we look back, we wanted to perform more than getting an award,” said RM. “We did not get the award. I think many of you probably expected this . ‘Come and get it yourself.’ We took it that way.”
J-Hope said, “Honestly I would be lying if I say I am not disappointed at all,” and according to Suga, J-Hope was the most disappointed in the group.
When the winner of the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance was announced, they had varied reactions.
“It’s like watching something shocking on TV,” said RM while Jin said, “It was fun to watch our expressions one by one.” Jungkook said, “I tried not to feel nervous. I thought I wasn’t.”
They also tried bottle flipping as a fun way to guess if they would win the award or not with J-Hope saying, “If it stands, we will get the award. I said it but it was falling down non-stop.”
J-Hope added, “Anyways, I feel disappointed because I know that our fans are disappointed” while RM said, “We were worried about you guys.”
“Let’s go there next year and get the award in person,” they said.
“I saw a few articles that said we failed to get the award. But I would not really call that a failure. We were nominated for the first time. It was our first performance as a nominee,” said RM.
“And although you may feel disappointed that we did not receive the award. But in a way, we started from nothing and came this far. The path we are on right now. In a way, the Grammy Awards is the most prestigious award in the world. And to think our influence reaches that kind of place, it’s hard not to be happy about that. And I’m very much looking forward to everything BTS and ARMY will accomplish,” said Jimin.
RM said, “BTS never makes it at one go.”
“Anyway, we performed on our dream stage,” said J-Hope and RM told fans, “Thanks to you, we appeared on the Grammy Awards.”
Jin said for the Grammys, they prepared champagne “but we drank all of it after the awards.”
“Our positivity will exist in 2021,” said V.
Each BTS member gave their final words to fans.
J-Hope: “So anyway, thank you again to the fans who watched with us until such a late hour or an early hour. To be honest, I am a bit disappointed but we performed at the Grammy Awards, which we always wanted to do. We got nominated. Without your support, we would not have had that honor so thank you so much. It also gives us motivation now that it turned out like this. So we will strive to do better and show you better performances this year, everyone. We will do our best. I love you, ARMY.”
Jin: “I am really happy when I go to award shows or go to work these days. It is not just our names in the news. ARMY gets mentioned too. And I am so happy that we are making history together. And we really worked hard for our performance today. Thank you ARMY for being with us for such a historic performance. I love you.”
V: “Well, I think today’s events happened so that we can reach a better path. I hope we can perform with ARMY next year. I hope we can make better music, give better performances and film great videos so that we can come back to the Grammy Awards next year.”
Jungkook: “I looked at the Grammy website. And we got the most votes, should I say, for the most promising artist. So I realized the magnitude of your love and support. ARMY is so amazing. Thank you so much. Based on this experience today, I'll try to become a person who puts in much more effort. I love you.”
RM: “ARMY everywhere. No worries. It's all good. We did it. We made it. We got you. You guys are our prize. You are our champagne. Let's cheer. It's good. It's more than enough. I would be lying if I said I was not disappointed. But this is really amazing, everyone, don't you think? Please give yourself a hand and pat yourself on the back. We accomplished something amazing. And it's more fun to have things left to accomplish. So let's promise ourselves to never stop. Let's just crush it this year.”
Jimin: “I felt so happy and honored with no regrets at all today. So please don't feel disappointed. As I said, the future is more important. I think it was really a positive day. I love you, everyone. I love you.”
Suga: “I had so much fun performing on stage after a really long time. We performed. It would have been better if we got the award. But that is not up to how hard we work. Maybe we'll get it next year if we work harder this year. That's what I think. So it is up to us, I guess. So this year, we should work harder.”
