Bypass road in Bulacan vies for best road project award in Asia
The 9.6-kilometer Pulilan-Baliuag Diversion Road in Bulacan is nominated as the best community road in Asia and Australasia, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) revealed on Saturday, March 13.

In a statement, the DPWH said the bypass road is the Philippine’s official entry for the MINO Best Project Award - Community Road Category of the Road Engineering Association of Asia and Australasia (REAAA).
"It was nominated for its “social effectiveness and impact, environment friendliness and technical excellence,” the department said.
DPWH Secretary Mark Villar said the Pulilan – Baliuag Diversion Road, which was completed in 2019, promotes biking for transport and recreational use, making it a safer and environment-friendly road facility for motorists, bikers and pedestrians.
Under the project’s final phase, lane widening and installation of reflectorized bike lanes and metal beam guards, and the construction of slope protection structures were implemented.
Started in 2016, Villar said the road project is considered as one of the most cost-effective solution for the lingering traffic congestion on the Pulilan and Baliuag portions of Daang Maharlika in Bulacan.
“The business climate in the areas of Pulilan, Calumpit, and Baliuag and access to the North Luzon Expressway have improved since this diversion road was opened,” said Villar.
DPWH Regional Director Roseller Tolentino said that since its opening, the bypass road was key to reducing the travel time between the towns of Baliuag and Pulilan from one hour to just 30 minutes.
Aside from the bypass road, the Anduyan Bridge in La Union, which supports tourism, is also nominated in the REAAA.
