Comelec hopes more people will participate in the March 13 Palawan Plebiscite
Although hoping that more people will participate in the March 13 Palawan Plebiscite, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said historically plebiscites don't have high voter turnout.

"Historically, plebiscites don't have high voter turnout. Records show that the highest turnout during plebiscites is only at 47 percent," MIMAROPA Regional Election Director (RED) Atty. Gloria Ramos-Petallo said in a virtual press briefing Monday, March 8.
Still, she said, they hope they will have 100 percent voting during the plebiscite.
Petallo also said that even if the voter turnout will be low, the plebiscite "will remain valid for as long as there are voters." "
"We will just see who will have the higher number of votes, yes or no," she said.
Comelec Spokesman James Jimenez also echoed what Petallo said.
"We are not looking at the number of voters. That is not necessary for the validity of the result of the plebiscite," he said.
Based on Comelec records there are a total of 490,639 registered voters eligible to participate in the plebiscite. The
Comelec originally scheduled the conduct of the plebiscite to ratify the division of the province of Palawan into Palawan del Norte, Palawan Oriental, and Palawan del Sur on May 11, 2020 in accordance to Republic Act No. 11259.
It was suspended in April 2020 due to the pandemic and the Enhanced Community Quarantine in Luzon. On October 8, 2020, the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) approved the proposal to already hold the plebiscite in Palawan.
The poll body then set the plebiscite on March 13, 2021.
