2 PCG officers receive presidential award for heroism

President Duterte has approved the conferment of the Order of Lapu-Lapu, Rank of Kamagi on two Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) officers for their acts of heroism and kindness in serving the Filipino people.

In a statement, the Coast Guard said Duterte has recognized the heroism of Lieutenant Commander Francis Ariel Sualog and Probationary Ensign Ralph Barajan for their efforts in upholding the safety of their fellow Filipinos.

Sualog, a member of the PCG Chaplain Service, was serving as the team leader of the PCG Task Unit in Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2 when a pregnant Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia unexpectedly gave birth at the airport on Aug. 5, 2020.

Despite Sualog’s lack of experience in childbirth, he ensured the safe and successful delivery of a healthy baby boy.

Meanwhile, Barajan was off-duty when he saved 62 lives aboard an ill-fated passenger vessel MV Siargao Princess in the waters of Cebu on Nov. 7, 2019.

He also received the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea at the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in Pasay City on Feb. 24.

Under Executive Order No. 35 series of 2017, the Order of Lapu-Lapu is awarded to government officials or personnel, as well as private individuals in recognition of their invaluable service in relation to the advocacy of the President.

It is also an appreciation to the deserving recipients for their “acts of valor and kindness,” as well as “remarkable contributions” to the country.

The transmittal paper of the conferment was received by Department of Transportation - Philippines (DOTr) Secretary Arthur Tugade on Feb. 4.
