Psy’s iconic ‘Gangnam Style’ music video garners 4 billion views on YouTube


Korean rapper Psy’s iconic “Gangnam Style” music video has reached another milestone on YouTube.

The music video has garnered 4 billion views on YouTube on March 7, or eight years and seven months since it was uploaded on July 15, 2012.

“Gangnam Style,” featuring a horse-riding dance, became viral and catapulted Psy to worldwide fame with celebrities taking notice.

Guinness World Records declared in September 2012 that “Gangnam Style” was the most liked video in YouTube history with 2.14 million and it reached 100 million views the same month.

It garnered 500 million views in October 2012 and on Dec. 21, 2012, it achieved another Guinness World Record when it reached 1 billion views, becoming the first video to reach the milestone on YouTube and just 159 days after its upload.

“Gangnam Style” reached 2 billion views on May 31, 2014 and climbed to 3 billion views on Nov. 26, 2017.

The song is the carrier track of Psy’s album “Psy 6 (Six Rules), Part 1” released on the same day as the music video.

Because of his instant fame, Psy was signed up under Schoolboy Records for his US career and appeared in concerts and TV shows in the US.

He went to the MTV Video Music Awards and on the “Ellen DeGeneres Show” where he taught DeGeneres and Brienty Spears the horse-riding dance.

“Gangnam Style” debuted at No. 64 on Billboard Hot 100 and climbed to No. 2 in October 2012 and stayed there for weeks.

Psy sang “Gangnam Style” with Madonna at her New York City concert in November 2012 and also at the American Music Awards.

He performed at TNT's "Christmas in Washington" in December 2012, which was attended by then President Barack Obama and his family.

“Gangnam Style” sold 9.7 million copies in 2012, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), to become the third best-selling single in the world that year.

The music video is No. 5 on YouTube’s All-Time Most Viewed Music Videos.
