Foreign dignitaries share their countries' vaccine experiences with Robredo

Vice President Leni Robredo said that when various foreign ambassadors paid a courtesy call to her, they shared their own countries’ experiences in vaccinating their citizens against COVID-19.

In particular, she talked about how Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Koshikawa Kazuhiko shared that Japan plans to produce its own vaccines for the general population.

“Iyong mga nakausap na mga ambassadors syempre, kinukwento nila iyong sa kanila din (The ambassadors that I have talked with, they also shared their experience ),” Robredo said in her Sunday radio show.

Robredo said Kazuhiko told her that Japan ordered a lot of Pfizer vaccines, but they are focused on producing their own COVID-19 vaccines for the general population. Japan, she added, is following the footsteps of Cuba and Vietnam, both of which want to produce their own vaccines.

In the past couple of weeks, a number of foreign ambassadors either invited Robredo to their official residences or paid a courtesy visit to her at the Quezon City Reception House, where she holds office.

The United Kingdom’s envoy to Manila, Daniel Pruce, visited the vice president. They talked about UK’s contribution to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) COVAX facility, which will ensure access to safe and equitable COVID-19 vaccines by lower-income economies like the Philippines.

The UK donated $735 million to COVAX, following Germany with $1.097 billion and the United States with a pledge of $4 billion.

Robredo said that Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines Peter MacArthur shared how Canada is ready to roll out the vaccines to the public.

Like the Philippines, Canada prioritized the inoculation of its health care workers.

“Para iyong kwento this week na dadating iyon na for the general public. Alam mo puwede ka magpaschedule (The news is that the vaccines for the general public will arrive this week. You can get scheduled),” Robredo said.

The vice president emphasized the need to look at the best practices of other countries in their vaccination program.

Robredo noted the importance of taking lessons from countries that have already started mass vaccination against COVID-19.
