#WalangPasok: Class, work suspended due to ‘Auring’ on Feb. 22

Classes and work on Monday, Feb. 22, were declared suspended by some local government units (LGUs) due to Tropical Depression #AuringPH.

- In a Facebook post, the Philippine Information Agency-Romblon announced that work and classes in all levels in the province of Romblon are suspended Monday, Feb. 22, due to #AuringPH.

- In a Facebook post, Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez also announced the suspension of work and classes in all levels due to #AuringPH.

The Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) do not issue cancellation or suspension of classes at the basic and higher education levels, respectively.

Pursuant to Executive Order No. 66, s. 2012 signed by former President Benigno Aquino III, “localized cancellation or suspension of classes and work in government offices may be implemented by local chief executives, as chairmen of the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (LDRRMC) concerned, in coordination with PAGASA and the NDRRMC, specifically in flood-prone or high risk areas” in the absence of typhoon signal warnings.

DepEd reiterated that the rules on automatic suspension of classes remain the same: Storm Signal No. 1 suspends classes in kindergarten; Signal No. 2 suspends classes in kindergarten, elementary, and high school; and Signal No. 3 suspends classes from kindergarten to college - including graduate schools and government offices.

Based on the existing guidelines of CHED, classes at the collegiate level “may be suspended at the discretion” of local chief executives of heads of higher education institutions during typhoons/storms, flooding and other weather disturbances.

According to the Severe Weather Bulletin issued by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) as of 5:00 a.m., Monday, Feb. 22, several areas are under Signal No. 1 as Tropical Depression “Auring” continues to weaken as it approaches Dinagat Islands-Homonhon Island area.
