Elevated monorail, battery-powered buses being proposed in Baguio City

BAGUIO CITY – A multinational company is proposing an P11.5-billion mass transport system that is seen to solve this city’s massive traffic problem.

Part of the program is a four-kilometer elevated monorail around the central business district area that will consist of eight strategic stations.
 
Also part of the plan is a series of feeder lines that will be composed of battery-powered buses in an aim to make Baguio City the first urban center to adopt the green ecosystem and electric-powered monorail system.
 
Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong revealed that the Metro Global Holdings Corporation is already authorized by the city government to conduct a pre-feasibility study for the proposed mass public transportation solution.
 
“The project will be fully funded by the company through the public-private partnership over a 50-year period of the franchise,” said Magalong.
 
Magalong also urged the company to submit its unsolicited proposal for the immediate evaluation and assessment by the city’s Public Private Partnership for the People – Selection Committee.
 
Under the company’s proposal, the city government will be entitled to a five percent share of the fixed fare that will be collected from the single use ticket system.
 
Magalong is hopeful that apart from addressing the worsening traffic problem, the project would help the city reach their goal of bringing back the city’s greenery through various environmental programs and projects.
