ASINGAN, Pangasinan – Almost 100 stray dogs and cats were adopted by Pangasinenses to save them for euthanasia or mercy killing.

Jaya Uy, a volunteer for the Red Cubs Pet Patrol, said that since last year, their group, a non-government organization, has been rescuing dogs abandoned by their former owners.

“The advocacy of Red Cubs Pet Patrol is to rescue those beautiful animals (dogs and cats) from suffering and protect their health,” Uy said.

Uy explained that once stray dogs and cats were rescued by pounds, they usually have a grace period of 10 days to wait for the original owners to claim them.

But if they were unclaimed, those animals will be euthanized.

“They will be killed, injected, in a way mercy killing because there is no budget for that pound to feed so many dogs,” she added.

To avoid the killings, Red Cubs claimed them from pounds and gave them for free to capable and willing adopters in Pangasinan, Bulacan, Cavite, and nearby areas.

Jaya said that the Red Cubs started its operations last September until they reached Pangasinan last month.

Red Cubs has coordinated with the local government of Asingan to promote animal welfare and help them find loving and compassionate adopters.
