African Swine Fever reported in Pastrana, Leyte

TACLOBAN CITY – Two barangays in Pastrana, Leyte have cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) based on the laboratory result handed by Department of Agriculture-8 Regional Executive Director Angel Enriquez.

Pastrana Mayor Maritess Marcos confirmed cases in Barangay Jones and Calsadahay in a collaborative meeting last Friday with 29 barangay chairmen in the municipality, together with the municipal agriculturist to address issues and concerns concerning the outbreak of ASF in Leyte.

Pastrana is the eighth municipality in Leyte infested with ASF that has also spread in La Paz, Javier, Dulag, Tanauan, Palo, Burauen, and MacArthur.

All hogs within a 500-meter radius from the confirmed cases in the two barangays would be subjected to depopulation immediately to prevent the virus from spreading and protect the town's hog industry.

DA 8 reminded hog owners to maintain the cleanliness of their pigpens and piggeries by constant disinfection, installing footbaths, using clean clothes, always wearing slippers or boots, and feeding proper animal feeds instead of food scraps and other waste materials to prevent the virus from spreading.
