DPWH completes P50-M flood control project in Southern Leyte

MAASIN CITY – The Department of Public Works and Highways-Southern Leyte District Engineering Office (DPWH-SLDEO) has completed the P50-million flood control project in Southern Leyte.

DPWH-SLDEO District Engineer Manolo Rojas said that the problem of overflowing and erosion on Amparo River in Macrohon, Southern Leyte will now be addressed with the completion of the major flood mitigation structure built by DPWH-SLDEO.

Rojas said that Amparo River is a prominent watercourse in Macrohon and situated near this river are Barangays Amparo and Mabini. These two barangays, which are located in low-lying areas, were tagged as vulnerable to flooding.

Chris Marlou Maturan, chairman of Barangay Mabini and a beneficiary of the flood control project, narrated how strong typhoons in the past, “Bising,” “Basyang,” and “Ruping,” flooded their village, usually with an above-head depth, endangering the lives and properties of the residents.

“I am really grateful for this river control project here in Amparo-Mabini because our village is now safe from flooding,” Maturan said.

Rojas said that this completed flood control structure, with a total allocation of P50 million, is a 425-linear meter stone masonry on steel sheet piles.

“The construction of flood control is always included in our priority development projects. We believe it is the permanent solution to safeguard the lives and properties of the residents living near rivers and other flood-prone areas,” Rojas.

Rojas explained that flood control structures not only prevent flooding in the river’s adjacent areas but also protect against scouring or erosions along riverbanks.
