'Auring' now a tropical storm; heavy rains in Mindanao, Visayas, Bicol, S. Luzon seen
Tropical depression “Auring” intensified into a tropical storm on Thursday, Feb. 18, and will likely to bring heavy rains over Mindanao, Visayas, Southern Luzon, and Bicol region by weekend, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
At 10 a.m. Thursday, PAGASA said Auring was last estimated 685 kilometers (km) east-southeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph.
It added that Auring may intensify further into a severe tropical storm prior to its landfall over Caraga region between Saturday evening, Feb. 20, and Sunday morning, Feb. 21.
Heavy rains may affect Visayas, Caraga, Northern Mindanao, Bicol region, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, northern Palawan, including Calamian and Cuyo Islands over the weekend, which may last until Monday.
"Residents in these areas and all disaster risk reduction and management offices concerned, especially those situated in areas identified in hazard maps to be highly or very highly susceptible to flooding and rain-induced landslides, are advised to take appropriate preparatory measures," PAGASA said in its 11 a.m. severe weather bulletin issued Thursday.
4,654 barangays at risk
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) has already identified 4,654 barangays susceptible to landslide and flood in Bicol, Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Davao and Caraga.
The list is now being cascaded to the LGUs for maximum preparation.
Auring, the first severe weather disturbance to enter the country’s area of responsibility this year, is forecast to move generally west to west-northwest, with an increase in speed by Friday, as it turns more west-northwest.
Based on PAGASA’s latest forecast, Auring will be at 535 km east-southeast of Hinatuan by Friday.
It will move toward mainland Mindanao by Saturday, and will be at 315 km east-southeast of Hinatuan.
By Sunday, Auring will be in the vicinity of Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, as a severe tropical storm, PAGASA weather specialist Ariel Rojas said.
Afterward, the storm will move northwest and traverse parts of Southern Leyte, Central Visayas, and Western Visayas, he added.
By Monday, Auring will be already in the northern part of Sulu Sea, or about 85 km north of Cuyo, Palawan.
Rojas said the storm will be over the West Philippine Sea, at 420 km west of Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro by Tuesday, Feb. 23.
PAGASA said rough to very rough seas will be experienced over the seaboards of Northern Luzon and the eastern seaboards of Central and Southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao due to the combined effects of the surge of northeast monsoon or “amihan” and tropical storm Auring.
