San Juan City bids goodbye to 'spaghetti' wires, leaning poles of utility firms

The San Juan City local government, in partnership with various public utility companies, signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) on Tuesday regulating the wires and cables of utility companies operating in the city.

The MOA was inked by San Juan City Mayor Francisco Zamora and the heads of the companies, creating a joint executive-legislative task force which aims to ensure that wires and cables from utility companies will be regulated and monitored to prevent accidents like electrocution, fire, obstruction, as well as to prevent the degradation of the city's landscape and protect its historical landmarks.

The task force was made in response to City Ordinance No. 65, Series of 2020, the “Anti-Dangling Wire Task Force Ordinance of San Juan”.

“COVID-19 is our top priority, but we cannot set aside other concerns such as these ‘spaghetti’ wires and leaning poles because they are also dangerous especially during storms and earthquakes. They are not just accidents waiting to happen. They are also an eyesore in the city’s landscape,” Zamora said.

Zamora led the ceremonial cutting of the dangling cables and wires to initiate the city's clean-up drive.

He added that the "spaghetti" wires and damaged unused cables also caused power and internet interruptions after the onslaught of typhoons, such as Rolly and Ulysses last year.
