IATF allows deferment of cinema reopening ---MMC

The deferment of the reopening of cinemas has been allowed by the economic team of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID), ParaÃ±aque City Mayor Edwin Olivarez said on Monday.

"Pumayag naman po ang ating economic team ng ating IATF na idefer muna po itong implementation ng pagbubukas ng cinema (The economic team of IATF has allowed to defer the implementation regarding the opening of cinemas)," Olivarez who is also chairman of the Metro Manila Council (MMC) said in an interview on DZMM.

When asked if the local government units (LGUs) were consulted regarding the matter, Olivarez said the MMC had regular consultations with the IATF except for the specific issue of reopening cinemas.

"Ito pong specific na (sa) cinema hindi po nagkaroon ng consultation (This specific topic on cinemas did not go through consultation with us)," Olivarez said.

He said the MMC will have a meeting with the secretary of the IATF's economic team on Wednesday. He said the MMC supports the opening up of the economy but it "could not sacrifice" the health protocols.

"Alam naman po natin sa cinema enclosed yan, tatlong oras airconditioned. Questionable yung ventilation (We all know that cinemas are airconditioned and are enclosed for three hours. It's ventilation is questionable)," Olivarez said.

Last week, the government's pandemic task force has allowed traditional cinemas in areas under the General Community Quarantine (GCQ) to reopen.
