Teen found dead in Leyte flooding as rate of rainfall more than doubled

TACLOBAN CITY - A 15-year-old male was found dead Thursday (Feb. 11) after allegedly drowning in the flood caused by days of heavy downpour brought about by the Tail-end of the Frontal System.

The teenager was among those who were trapped in the flood that reached up to the roofs of dozen of houses in Tsu Chi Village, Sitio Caloogan, Brgy. San Jose, Palo, Leyte.

At least 64 villages in 7 municipalities and 1 city namely: San Miguel, Sta. Fe, Palo, Pastrana, Dagami, Dulag, Tanauan, and Tacloban City were flooded rendering some roads and national highways impassable.

Work and classes in Palo town also remain suspended since at least 22 out of 33 villages were soaked in flood, while a landslide was reported in Brgy. Barayong.

The mayor has attributed the flooding to the rate of rainfall which reached up to 12mm beyond the 5mm normal range which caused the two huge rivers in the municipality to overflow.

In a media interview, Mayor Frances Ann Petilla shared over 3,000 families have been affected by the heavy downpour and flooding.

The Police Regional Office 8 also based in Palo town has deployed 1,465 Search, Rescue, and Retrieval Operations personnel and 328 from the Leyte Police Provincial Office.
